Despite the recent creation of the company in 2017, our technology is the result of more than 20 years of experience in the offshore renewable energy sector. Carlos Casanovas started working on the concept in 2012 while studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 2017, together with Alex Raventos, both co-founders filed the patent and incorporated the company. Since then, we have been advancing fast in the technology development and have raised private investment as well obtained prizes, funding, and recognition from leading such as Innoenergy, H2020 program, EIC Accelerator, CDTI, ENISA, or ACCIO.
The company is very proud of having attracted top talent from diverse backgrounds. Our team is composed of accomplished professionals in the fields of wind energy, mechanical, electrical, structural, aeronautical and naval engineering, strategy and business advisory. We have studied in leading institutions such as the MIT, Singularity University, Imperial College London or INSEAD as well as worked in top companies and research centers in the wind and offshore energy sector.

Founders

Alex Raventos

CEO & Co-Founder

Alex (GSP at Singularity University, Executive Master at MIT-Portugal and Industrial Engineer from UPC) worked as an expert on techno-economic analysis of new offshore technologies before co-founding X1 Wind. He has more than 10 years of experience in offshore renewables, being Head of the Economic Analysis Department at WavEC (PT, 2009-15), New Programs Coordinator at Bluewater (NL, 2014-15) and founding its own consultancy Inn2Grid (2014), having raised more than 10 million Euros in public funding. Before that, he also worked in the development of solar PV projects at Abencis (2007-09).

Carlos Casanovas

CTO & Co-Founder

Carlos (M. Sc. at MIT and Industrial Engineer from UPC) developed the X1 Wind concept while studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, 2012-2014). He has extensive experience as Dynamic Analysis Engineer in offshore wind, having worked on Adwen (Gamesa/Siemens) on their AD8-180 8MW offshore wind turbine (2016-17) as well as in Alstom Wind (2007-12), leading the drive train design of HALIADE 6 MW offshore turbine. He also worked at Bluewater (NL, 2014-15) where he created advanced simulation models for integrated tidal turbine-platform analysis as well as participating in the assembly, anchoring and installation of their Bluetec prototype.

Santiago Canedo

Mechanical Engineering Manager

Santiago leads the mechanical design of the PivotBuoy® mooring and passive yaw system. He brings 20 years of experience in the wind sector. He participated in the design of Onshore and Offshore Wind Turbines from 1,2MW to 12MW, in manufacturers as Ecotècnia, Alstom, and GE.

Iuliu Prepelita

Naval Architecture Manager

Iuliu leads the Naval Architecture team overseeing all phases of structural design and stability calculations. He brings a broad experience having worked for Rolls-Royce Marine and having founded Seanaptic. He holds a BSc in Naval Architecture and an MSc in Aeronautics from Imperial College London with a focus on FEA and CFD software development.

Maria Vergés

Systems Engineering Manager

Maria takes part in the development and design of different components, and supports the lead team in project management activities. She has previous experience as an energy efficiency engineer at Veolia and holds a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering with a Double Degree by the UPC and the TUM.

Adrián Oliva

Electrical & SCADA Manager

Adrian is responsible for the electrical and controls-related systems of the platform development and grid integration. He has several years' experience in CENER, working in grid integration, microgrids and power conversion of wind turbines. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering by the UPM.

Albert Cortés

Project Manager

Albert is responsible for the planning and coordination of the PivotBuoy project, and for the development and installation of our 1:3-scale prototype in the Canary Islands. He has previous experience working at ABB being Project Manager for large-scale projects, and he is an Industrial Engineer by the UPC.

Pau Alcoverro

Lead Systems and Mooring Engineer

As part of the engineering team, Pau supports the design and development of different components of the structure. He holds a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering with a Double Degree by the UPC and University of Gävle.

Jorge Casanovas

Offshore Construction Manager

Jorge is responsible for the planning and execution of the construction, assembly, installation and operational activities. He brings more than 10 years' experience in operations and project management of large civil projects. He is a MSc in Civil Engineer and also holds a MSc in Marine Renewable Energies Harnessing.

João Neves

Director of Strategy & Business Development

Joao leads our strategy and business development activities. He brings around 10 years of experience in business and strategy advisory, mostly for the Boston Consulting Group in locations such as Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. He holds an MBA from INSEAD, an Executive Masters in Sustainable Energy Systems, and an MSc in Civil Engineering.

Guillermo García

Offshore Engineer

Guillermo supports the engineering team in different activities, as well as in the communication and dissemination tasks of the company. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Energy Engineering by the UC3M, and a Master's Degree in Renewable Energy.

Paula González

Accounting & Finance Assistant

Paula supports the accounting and administration activities as well as in the financial reporting of the company. She holds a Certificate of Higher Education in Management Assistance.

Nil Vilas

Software Engineer

Nil supports the engineering team through the development, modification, and maintenance of software tools. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Informatics Engineering Specialized in Computing from the UPC.

Javier García Cervilla

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Javier develops the mechanical components of the passive yaw system. He has broad experience in pitch and yaw systems for wind turbines, bringing +10 years of experience having worked for OEM’s like Alstom and GE. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering specialized in Mechanical Engineering from UPC.

Diego Lisi

Senior Structural Engineer

Diego makes sure the platform structure withstands assembly, transport, & operational conditions. He has more than eight years of experience in the field of offshore topsides removal and embedded piles soil-structure interaction. Apart from outdoor activities, he is committed to innovating the floating wind industry with an international team.

Silvia Fontanet

Finance Controller

Silvia is responsible for financial supervision and control as well as accounting management. She has previous experience in the management of renewable companies working at Renovalia as an International Financial Controller. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from the UB, and a Master's Degree in Economic and Financial Management.

Marina Tomás

HR Manager

Marina is the go-to person for all employee-related matters. She holds a Bachelor’s in Psychology with a major in human resources from Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. She brings more than 9 years of experience in human resources and the last 7 years in the industrial engineering and wind sector.

Gabriel Galián

Loads Engineer

Gabriel's field of expertise is the calculation of design loads for the floating structure, and developing aeroelastic models. He has several years of experience working with SGRE wind turbines. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mining and Energy Engineering from the UPCT, and a Master’s Degree in Renewable Energy.

Ignacio Castelló

Loads Engineer

Ignacio supports the engineering team through the loads assessment, dynamic analysis of the structure and model validation. He has previous experience as wind turbine loads engineer working for GE. He holds a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Aerospace Engineering by the Technical University of Madrid.

Lucas D'Avila Souza Fraiha

Business Development Analyst

Lucas is responsible for the assessment of floating offshore wind markets around the world and supports the strategy definition of the company. He holds a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and a Master's Degree in International Management from ESADE.

Tomás Deus Botti

Systems Engineer

Tomás supports the systems engineering team in the design of outfittings and extra material included in the platform such as the ventilation or the fire extinction system. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

Mauro Bianco Scagliarini

PR & Marketing Associate

Mauro is responsible for the strategic management of X1 Wind's marketing and communications and for supporting de Business Development Team. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Public Relations and a Diploma in Sustainable Development & Renewable Energies.

Laura Ramírez Anillo

Technical project manager / Lead structural engineer

Laura makes sure the platform stands for the required lifetime working on fatigue methodology and calculations on the structural team. She has experience working on Haliade-X development at GE and being part of the Edison program. She holds a degree in Physics by University of Sevilla and a MSC in Renewable Energy from Univ. Complutense, Madrid.

Ruth Lamas

Operations Engineer

Ruth supports the operations team through the assembly and load out of our 1:3 scale prototype in the Canary Islands, as well as the designing and management of our marine operations. She is also responsible of the assembly of our 1:1 scale prototype. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design Engineering from the University of Las Palmas.

Paula Cisneros

Junior Project Manager

Paula, as part of the project management team, supports the planning, coordination and development of our prototype. She holds a Double Bachelor Degree in Mechanical and Industrial Design Engineering from University of Málaga, and a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Technical University of Madrid.

Enric Farró i Oller

Marine Engineer

Enric is part of the engineering team and works on the development and desing of the marine systems involved in the platform. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Naval Engineering by the UPC.

Elena Clavero Aguilo

Cost Engineer

Elena is responsible for cost estimation activities and supports the Project and BD teams with budgeting and quotation tasks. She brings 10 years experience as Cost Engineer in the automotive industry. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering specialized in Environmental Technologies.

Sara Uceda Gil

Naval & Simulation Engineer

Sara supports the engineering team through numerical simulation and dynamic response assessment of the platform under external loading. She has previous experience in the floating offshore wind industry as well as in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. She holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture

Helena Garcia de la Fuente

Systems Engineer

Helena supports the systems engineering team in the development and design of different components. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design Engineering and currently pursuing a Master's degree in additive manufacturing engineering.

Alexandre Azevedo Samel

Senior Naval Architect

Alexandre makes sure the platform structures withstands operational and abnormal conditions during its lifetime. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and has more than 7 years experience working on structural design of nuclear-powered submarines.

Sonsoles Pax Sánchez

Naval Architect

Sonsoles works with the integration of structural components into the floating platform as a Naval Engineer within the Naval and Structural team. She focus on the stress analysis and structural design with FE methods. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture and Master's Degree in Naval Engineering.

Gabriel García Matey

Automation Engineer

Gabriel is responsible for designing and optimizing control systems of the platform, while also providing valuable support to the SCADA of the platform. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Electronics and Automation Engineering by the UC3M

Marina Cerdà Alonso

Naval Architect

Marina works in the Naval Architecture team performing structural and stability tasks. These include structural design and analysis, and stability checks. She holds a Bachelor's Degree by the UPC and a Master's Degree by the TU Delft, both in Naval Engineering with specialization in Ship and Offshore Structures.

Cristian Martinez

IT Systems Administrator

As an IT systems administrator, Cristian's responsibilities include configuring and maintaining network infrastructure, managing user accounts and permissions, ensuring network security, troubleshooting connectivity issues, performing data backups, and monitoring network performance for optimal operation.

Jon Poulet

Electrical Engineer

Jon is part of the electrical team, and he performs part of the design of electrical systems in the projects developed within the company. He has a Degree in Renewable Energy Engineering and a Master's Degree in Photovoltaic Systems Engineering.

Mikel Juaristi

Electrical Engineer

Mikel is part of the electrical team, and he works on the electrical system of the platform, from the design of cabinets to providing the necessary power to the entire onboard system. He holds a Bachelor Degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering by the UPNA.

Josep Mesegué

Naval Engineer

Josep is part of the Naval Architecture team. As Naval Engineer, he carry out structural tests to ensure that the various components can withstand the static and dynamic loads. Josep holds a double bachelor's degree in marine and naval engineering and a master's degree in naval engineering, specialising in marine energy, all from UPC.

Andrés Morilla

Naval Engineer

Andrés is part of the Naval Architecture team. He carries out the static and dynamic stability calculations and analysis of X1Wind floaters. He holds a naval engineer degree from ENSTA Bretagne and a IUBA's naval engineering background. Before joining X1, Andres worked on a CIFRE PhD, about a floating WEC system.

Guillem Cortés Carbonell

Structural Engineer

Guillem is a member of the Structural team and responsible for TTA. He has +10 years of experience in mechanical simulations, 5 in the Wind industry (GE), with experience in experimental validation. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, specializing in mechanical engineering and simulations (FEA).

Jordi Martin Montal

Stress Lead Engineer

Jordi is a member of the Structural team. He is in charge of numerically and analytically validating the welded joints of all tubular members and developing new calculation tools. He holds a Bachelor’s in Materials Science & Engineering and a Master’s degree in Advanced Industrial Mechanics from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

Iñigo Pacheco

Instrumentation Engineer

Iñigo is responsible for designing and optimizing data acquisition systems, overseeing tasks across the data value chain. He also contributes to the development of the platform’s SCADA. He holds a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a master’s in Industrial Engineering from UPNA.
